Allergy Testing
The first step in taking control of your allergies is conducting an allergy test. That way, we can find out if you’re allergic to your cat – or whether it’s the grass your cat has been rolling in that’s to blame.
There are a great many things that can cause allergies. Pollen, for example, is one of the most common reasons for an allergic response when outdoors. Potential indoor allergens include pet dander, dust mites, cockroaches, and mold. Food allergies and intolerances can cause a different set of allergic responses, including digestive issues, rashes, itchy skin, inflammation, and more.
At My Doc Urgent Care, we employ the gold standard of allergy testing: the skin prick test. A special testing device gently abrades the surface of your skin with a tiny amount of the allergens being tested for. Results are obtained in about 15 minutes. A positive test will appear as a raised, red bump similar to a mosquito bite on the skin.
Allergy Treatment
Long-term allergy relief is possible! The allergy protocol we use at My Doc Urgent Care treats more than just your symptoms – we can actually stop your allergic reaction before it occurs.
Which type of allergy treatment you need will depend on what is causing your allergies. Once we know that, we can explore what might be best for you: avoidance techniques, oral medications, or long-term relief with immunotherapy.
Immunotherapy involves giving you gradually increasing amounts of a specific allergen, in the form of an allergy shot, with the aim of building up your resistance to the allergen over time. In this way, we train your immune system to not react strongly – or at all – to the allergen.
The benefits of immunotherapy include enjoying life without the daily dependence on over-the-counter allergy medicine, long-term results (it is the only disease-modifying treatment for allergies), and a decreased chance of developing allergic asthma or reducing the severity of existing allergic asthma.
